I'm one progressive liberal who....

Compensation is decidedly warranted here, but there is no amount of compensation that could repair the sheer evil and horror of what happened.

You know what sounds completely ignorant to me? “Independence Day” Absolutely absurd.

Are blacks going to pay for damage done during summer riots etc?.. Are they going to pay to rebuild Autozone and Corn Pops business?

Are blacks going to pay compensation to the families of the North Troops that fought and died for their freedom

I wonder why this history was ignored outside of Oklahoma? I also had no idea that Texans (or anyone else) celebrated "Juneteenth" until the last decade or so. Where we live now, the history of residential boarding schools is looked at extremely negatively by the indigenous people. Many of the elders still living went through that horror. But growing up elsewhere, we weren't taught a single word about it.

IMO history -- whether it's our own personal history or that of our city, state, or country -- should be examined and remembered, both the good parts and the not-so-good parts. How else can we learn?

These I learned about from my family as a child. My grandmother and many of her siblings narrowly avoided having to go to one of these as my great-grandfather worked hard to maintain good relations with the white folks. He worked as a Choctaw law enforcement official under Peter Conser (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peter_Conser_House) and eventually kept a post office in a community bearing his name.

We learned of these re-education schools early on in our elementary school ... both the positives (some skills to survive in a white man’s world, learning to speak English, trade and commerce, etc.) and the negatives (the mistreatment and over-the-top punishments for non-conformity, etc.) but we’re shielded from the fact that there was also sexual abuse. Probably because we were elementary kids in the 70’s.

I just read today that somewhere in Canada they have discovered the remains of 215 kids (https://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-57291530) at one of these residential schools. Bad and sad stuff. Because of my Native heritage I grew up with great interest in oft glossed over bits of history like the tragedy at Wounded Knee and such. Certainly there are pieces of our nation’s history that some would rather not expose and some would like to hide and keep hidden. Like you, I think all should be examined and remembered...and learned from.

African American citizens don't find this demeaning.

Flagship Tulsa Race Massacre commemoration is scrapped after survivors demanded $1 million each to appear and $50 million for reparations fund

The commission sponsoring Monday's event initially agreed to $100,000 to each of the three survivors, along with $2 million in seed money for a reparations fund

State Sen. Kevin Matthews said that those requests were increased to $1 million each and $50 million for the fund, however, which couldn't be met

The commission had enlisted John Legend to headline the event and voting rights activist

Stacey Abrams was to deliver the keynote address

So they broke the agreement and wanted to extort more..there will never be enough they will keep demanding more

I absolutely love Independence Day. Living in the present it reminds me that I do not ever want to be exactly like our European friends, governmentally and socially speaking.

Edit: I should also add that I like to make noise and blow things up ... so another reason to like Independence Day.

Perhaps you’re just not as progressive as you think you are if you think Juneteenth has anything to do with you or what is comfortable to you ears,

I don't think there's anything progressive about ebonic speech.

People of any ethnicity are capable of offending my ears.
African American countrymen don't get a special pass.

I'm offended because it sounds worse than anything said on Amos n' Andy.
People find it OK to be offended by that.

Juneteenth? I can think of a million portmanteaus. Most of them are lazy and tend to be devolutions of language, but they aren't offensive.

Do you mind "Bennifer", "Smog", "Brunch", or "Bromance"?

Funny. We don't have a Queen.

No, but we don't have our own language.
We've been from the beginning a receptacle for the world's misfits.

We use the Queen's language, and only very rarely as properly as she does.
Ignorant people don't mind.
Educated people do.

Sure, most of them.

"Brunch" is ok since it usually costs three figures to have.
