Do you understand that the US oil market is broken up into a handful of different sections and districts? These are called Petroleum Administration for Defense Districts, or PADD.
There are 5 different PADD's in this country:
The market that is oversupplied is US PADD II, which is the Midwest refineries.
The current existing pipeline from Alberta ends at US PADD II; KXL would have diverted that pipeline to the Gulf, where the market is larger and demand is higher than in US PADD II.
You don't know ANYTHING about this subject and you're making it all up as you go.
Moron, the Tar Sands sludge isn't being refined in Canada, it's being refined in the US Midwest.
So Canada's gasoline costs have abso-fucking-lutely NOTHING to do with what we are talking about, which is unrefined Tar Sands sludge.

More oil was lost to pipeline leaks the last 5 years than to train accidents.
In fact, a part of the already existing KXL pipeline sprung a leak a couple years ago, and released more oil in that single incident than all train accidents for the entire year.

Right now, the Tar Sands crude can only be sold to US PADD II.
Because of that, we get a discount and an oversupply.
If KXL was built, that Tar Sands crude, that could only be sold to US PADD II, can now be sold anywhere in the world because of the Gulf access.
Global demand for that Tar Sands crude, that had previously been oversupplied to one buyer causing a discount, will naturally increase the cost of that crude because you have MORE COMPETITORS FOR THAT CRUDE...and those multiple competitors are going to bid against each other to secure that supply, and the way they do that is by increasing the amount they pay.
So to make this even simpler:
US PADD II - the only demand comes from the refineries in the region
US PADD III - since this has Gulf access, every single buyer in the world has demand for it...which means the supplier can ask for higher prices due to competitive demand.
Seriously, dude, take a macroeconomics course.
I'm not the one who wants Tar Sands Crude to be sold at a markup to China instead of to us at a discount...you do.

Absolutely no benefit to this country. The sludge would make its way to multi national (read...tax exempt) refiners in Texas, to be sold to the highest bidder on the open market.
The pipeline ends in the Mid West now, and will continue to refine Canada's sludge. If Canada wants to peddle that sludge elsewhere, they should build the pipeline to the Pacific and let China ship it home.
The way they've been doing it the last 15 years.
