Movement to defund police gains 'unprecedented' support across US

Maybe we don’t need so many. Who the fuck wants to live in a police state? We have 35,000 cops in Columbus. That’s one cop for every 24 persons. That’s far too many.
I think new standards for hire should be enacted, each police file should be reviewed by individual departments, police like Loehmann, who killed Tamir Rice, get hired by other police officers, this should not be allowed. Chauvin should have been fired before he ever had a chance to kill Floyd, he had more complaints against him than any other job would allow.

COLUMBUS, OH.?

HARDLY.

1,800 officers

Columbus Division of Police Established in 1816, the Columbus Division of Police has over 1,800 officers and 300 civilian employees. The Division covers 20 precincts across the greater Columbus metropolitan area, while serving nearly 800,000 residents.

hmm....wonder why Mott fucked up......

The movement to defund the police is gaining significant support across America, including from elected leaders, as protests over the killing of George Floyd sweep the nation.

For years, activists have pushed US cities and states to cut law enforcement budgets amid a dramatic rise in spending on police and prisons while funding for vital social services has shrunk or disappeared altogether.

Government officials have long dismissed the idea as a leftist fantasy, but the recent unrest and massive budget shortfalls from the Covid-19 crisis appear to have inspired more mainstream recognition of the central arguments behind defunding.

“To see legislators who aren’t even necessarily on the left supporting at least a significant decrease in New York police department [NYPD] funding is really very encouraging,” Julia Salazar, a New York state senator and Democratic socialist, told the Guardian on Tuesday. “It feels a little bit surreal.”

Floyd’s death on camera in Minneapolis, advocates say, was a powerful demonstration that police reform efforts of the last half-decade have failed to stop racist policing and killings. Meanwhile, the striking visuals of enormous, militarized and at times violent police forces responding to peaceful protests have led some politicians to question whether police really need this much money and firepower.
.....
Community groups advocating for defunding have put forward differing strategies, some merely opposing police budget increases, others advocating mass reductions, and some fighting for full defunding as a step toward abolishing police forces. Some initiatives are tied to the fight to close prisons. All are pushing for a reinvestment of those dollars in services.

In most countries the types inclined to join the police tend to be not-very-well-educated and somewhat aggressive, sharing some pretty nasty, often racist, prejudices. As far as I can gather, the training of American police, with its huge emphasis on the vital importance of the policeman's survival at whatever cost to the person he is arresting makes this much worse, especially in particularly racist communities. Add the bang-bangs and you have yourself an even bigger problem than they have in most counties, and from here it looks extremely difficult to reform them, even more difficult than it was here after they were turned into a tory strong-arm gang under Thatcher. When Hitler died in his bunker they got shot of the SS, so perhaps you'll be able to see your lot off with the Fatman. Good luck!

It will only pass in left wing locales anyway

Fuck em. Let em do it. Why argue?

That’s a serious problem too. The militarization of our police is the primary cause of excessive use of force and exacerbates the racial problem.

Thank Obama. It really ramped up under him

Some of us complained but you called it racism. Go figure. Look at you today

our tax dollars shouldn't go to murderers

fund healthcare not murder

Studies have shown for many, many years that throwing more and more money into police and prisons is counterproductive. It not only doesn’t decrease crime there’s a significant correlation between excessive spending and increased crime rates.

Where as investing in education, jobs and skills training, mental health and social services programs have a long and far better track record at reducing crime than increased spending on police does.

Since the mid 80’s at the State level funding has only increased 6% but spending on Police has risen 140%.

It’s also extremely disturbing seeing the police using this excess of money to garb themselves in military gear than commit acts of violence on peaceful protestors.

Given the police reputation here in Cbus I have no doubt what so ever that the police played no small roll in starting the violence during the protests here. I’ve seen them do it before.

It is hilarious seeing these JPP leftists bemoan the militarization of the police force.

It was due to laws passed in early 90s by House and Senate Democrats signed by Clinton and ramped up by Obama.

I specifically remember criticizing it years ago right here and JPP leftists called me racist for it.

Fuck you all

Where did you get that number from?

From The City of Columbus website....

By my calculations, 1,800 police in a city of 800,000 = 1 cop per 444 people.

Read on. I already stated that number was wrong. BTW, the rate you cited, which is the correct one, is still more than double the median number of police for a community.

Perfect. Sky high unemployment. Major cities not only looted but effectively sacked at this point with no hope of recovery. Now is clearly the perfect time to start firing govt employees. One of the few things that can actually bring money into your neighborhood. Add them to the unemployed.

Complete non sense argument. That same money can be used to employ healthcare workers, educators and social services personnel and that has shown to be more effective at reducing crime than hiring more cops does.

You anti-intellectual wingnuts just don’t seem to be able to grasp facts or analyze them. You don’t want reduced crime, higher standards of living and more freedom. You just want to beat heads and put people in cages. You could care less about fixing problems cause you don’t know how too.

This is an issue where I agree with the Libertarians. We have to many cops and to many of those have been militarized and it’s creating a police state where we serve them and not the other way around.

horsecrap.. cops dont need an MRAP huh?
with bricks and bottles and Molotov cocktails flying? I'd like to see you out theer in a patrol car

You nit wit. That’s what the National Guard is for. The last thing we need are cops who think they are soldiers. It’s unprofessional and it’s a conflict of interest and let’s not hide the fact that a whole shitload of the violence during peaceful protest were started by the police using ham handed and unnecessarily violent tactics. What about that?
