"Nearly half of Republicans think Trump should have authority to shutter media outlet

Hello Stretch,

The media is not trying to silence anybody.

And the mainstream media does not try to misrepresent people. They may try to spin stories one way or another, but they are not silencing anybody. That is not their job or function. And what the mainstream media does in reporting the news and in offering opinion is no justification for giving the President dictatorship power.

It is highly troubling that the right wishes for the President to have such absolute power.

Would the right have embraced this idea if Hillary had been elected?

Would they have gone along quietly if President Obama had tried to do this?

No, and no.

And that exposes how corrupted the right has become.

I'll try to make this simple, that you may actually understand it.

Trump does not want the media to stop bad mouthing him,
He's playing them, and you like so simply, he has put you in an Uncle Remus cartoon.

pleaseee don't throw me in that briar patch brer fox

"If the media can try to silence or misrepresent the people," the American people can shut them down by not paying their wares.

The government itself can't shut down the press, except in a time of war.

Anyone who tells you that Trump wants the press opposing him is malignantly motivated, woefully uneducated, mentally feeble, or any or all of the above.

Trump is so narcissistic that the cannot tolerate being "abused" (in his mind) by the press.

In 2012, a Fairleigh Dickinson University survey reported that Fox News viewers were less informed about current events than people who didn’t follow the news at all. The survey had asked current events questions like “Which party has the most seats in the House of Representatives?” and also asked what source of news people followed. The Fox viewers’ current events scores were in the basement. This finding was immediately trumpeted by the liberal media—by Fox, not so much—and has since become known as the Fox News effect. It conjures the image of Fox News as a black hole that sucks facts out of viewers’ heads.

"Many also got news from the major broadcast networks, Facebook, and the liberal news channel MSNBC".

Current event or historical knowledge? How about Columbia un-educated snowflakes, especially the ones who claim to be Constitutional Law students ........................

Are you a faithful Fox viewer, Stretch?

I remember seeing that story.

Some Fox news fans drew a blank stare when asked such a basic question as how many branches of the government there are, and what they are called.

Pathetic.

I think the right lost track with reality when they began to embrace the anti-global warming narrative.

They decided that science itself was a hoax.

You can, turn off the TV, choose your sources wisely, but legitimate reporting is a vital function to a free nation. Trump is wrong to make the accusations he does just because it is critical of him.

Key word LEGITIMATE reporting. We aren't getting much of that. Of course, to comprehend the OBVIOUS you would need a brain first.

Trump watches Fox, one of the least legitimated sources of news. I bet, from reading your posts, you do as well.

Do you have anything to prove the moronic allegation you are making?

Fox News was ranked the “most trusted” American TV news brand in the United States, and was second overall, behind only the British-based BBC, according to a new study.

The American conservatives have given up all pretense of reasoned, intelligent perspective, Poli.

They are now reduced to supporting the notion of a president having authority to shutter media that disagrees with the executive position.

Never has a political entity in America fallen so far in such a short time.

They hate to be told this...but supporters of Donald Trump are the spitting image of the supporters of Adolf Hitler back in 1930's Germany.

And, given the opportunity, they (and he) will lead us to a similar fate.

We should all be ashamed of this generation of Americans for what we are doing (and allowing to happen) to the Republic of which we have temporary custody.

while Republicans criticized the media in higher numbers than Democrats and independents, 12 percent of Democrats and 21 percent of independents said the president should have the power to close down news operations “engaged in bad behavior.”

Twelve percent of Democrats and 26 percent of independents agreed the media is “the enemy of the American people.

Talk about burying the lead -- I was thinking this post was about 50% plus of Republicans wanting to give the president the power to shut down news outlets......turns out the real story is that 12% of democrats and 26% indys want that too, that is a far bigger story..

You will now be accused of violating Godwin's Law...but pat of Godwin's law is that sometimes...it is an accurate comparison.

Actually that's stupid.

There are nutjobs in any category unfortunately.

The point is how MANY are Republican and how few are Democrats

Wrong but then you are a pus oozing pustule on the asshole of mankind.

It doesn't have a "political section," like all papers it has an editorial page, the same page you could find any of those noted conservative opinion writers I cited

They can write almost nothing in that paper without some political slant to it. It is embedded everywhere.
