Former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley will announce Wednesday that she is exiting the Republican presidential race, according to sources familiar with her plans, clearing the path for former President Donald Trump.

Haley had emerged as former President Donald Trump’s sole rival in the Republican presidential primary campaign, and while he rolled to victory in 14 of the 15 GOP contests on Super Tuesday, she foiled a possible clean sweep by winning in Vermont.

Across the Republican primaries on Super Tuesday, Haley won just 43 of the Republican delegates while Trump won 764.

Ahead of the South Carolina primary in February, Haley vowed to stay in the race through to Super Tuesday on March 5, saying she would continue to compete in the primary “until the last person votes, because I believe in a better America and a brighter future for our kids.”

Haley, who was Trump’s US ambassador to the United Nations, was the last of a dozen major candidates the former president vanquished in a GOP primary that he dominated from start to finish, even as he skipped the party’s debates and maintained a much lighter schedule of early-state travel than all of his rivals.

Haley is expected to deliver remarks in Charleston, South Carolina at 10 a.m. ET.

Wonder if she'll endorse the orange criminal?

This is a good example of that old saying that people get the government they deserve.

Doubtful after Trump's petty bullying and bullshit statements like this:https://thehill.com/homenews/campai...-donors-will-be-permanently-barred-maga-camp/
Trump warns Haley donors will be ‘permanently barred from the MAGA camp’

Sadly, agreed. Trump's MAGAts will end up killing hundreds, if not thousands, of Americans. Just more needless deaths like Trump's COVID rhetoric.

And here we've been told that Biden is the divisive one.

I'm not inclined to blame politicians for everything.

I think that we are the divisive ones.

Genuinely incompatible people, when forced to co-exist under the same government,
have no choice but to seethingly hate one another.

I've been seethingly hating people since the late 1940s.

Gearing up for the ugliest, most divisive and childish campaign of all time.

Feels like it's gonna be a tough year.

...but an exciting one! How much violence will Trump whip up prior to the election? How much after if he loses?

I still don't know what the substantial difference was between Haley's and Trump's political stances.

Haley's may have been even worse.
She was going after "entitlements" that Trump promised to protect.

They seemed equally deplorable to me.

The person doesn't matter. The policy positions matter.

The sight of Trump makes me vomit,
but if he were going to establish a UK style National Health Service
and an abolition of "right to work" laws,
I'd have to seriously consider voting for the troglodyte myself.

I'm not so hung up on the current social issues as the younger, modern liberals are.
I'm your basic 1930s socialist.

Thankfully you'll never have to make that choice. #TRE45ON, like all Republikkkans, is in the thrall of the wealthy and the corporations. He would never even consider such things, despite his prior vow to repeal the ACA and replace it was something "better and cheaper."

Once again, Republicans had a chance to ditch Trump and rally behind a conservative with more intelligence, better character, and more experience. But they decided they just couldn't bear to remove their lips from Trump's flabby ass.

The flip side of that is recognizing that, unlike the Democrats in 2016,the Republicans were truly democratic in their selection of candidates. No super delegates, note backstabbing backroom politics knifing one of their own in favor of another. It was the MAGA morons themselves who chose their "Daddy". Remember how the Republican establishment wanted "Jeb!" but the voters chose the Orange Jesus whereas Hillary stabbed Bernie in the back and lost the confidence of her own voters. Weird.

That doesn't bother me all that much

Political parties are not democracies, they are private organizations. We have a right to expect democracy in our public institutions, but not in private organizations

It's fine if political parties want to drape themselves with the trappings of democratic governance. But the fact is our greatest presidents FDR, Lincoln, Eisenhower were nominated by back room deals made between elder statesmen of the party.

Agreed on political parties. They are free to run themselves. That said, they will only have themselves to blame when voters don't trust them and stay home on election day as happened with Hillary in 2016 and will probably happen with the Republicans on November 3rd.

I am okay with political parties having a fail safe that prevents a complete nut job from being nominated.

In fact, our own constitution has that fail safe. The electoral college delegates in theory was supposed to keep nutjobs like Trump from ever seeing the inside of the Oval office

while i do not disagree with any of your literal points i think there is a problem within party politics when the parties say 'we know better and will not go with our supporters (voters) choice and instead will impose our annointed choice via back room deals'.

While you are correct they have every right to do that, I think it is a recipe for failure in the following election, if it is exposed and the person pushed aside was the true peoples choice.

Yes we can agree 'the people' can and do make bad choices from time to time, but we must then also acknowledge the 'back room deals also make bad choices from time to time.'. What is the protection against the latter?

I think if you want 'the people' to support you in the election following you should, in almost all instances put their choice and opinions over those of the back room dealers.
