Nikki Haley will exit GOP presidential race, clearing path for Donald Trump

while i do not disagree with any of your literal points i think there is a problem within party politics when the parties say 'we know better and will not go with our supporters (voters) choice and instead will impose our annointed choice via back room deals'.

While you are correct they have every right to do that, I think it is a recipe for failure in the following election, if it is exposed and the person pushed aside was the true peoples choice.

Yes we can agree 'the people' can and do make bad choices from time to time, but we must then also acknowledge the 'back room deals also make bad choices from time to time.'. What is the protection against the latter?

I think if you want 'the people' to support you in the election following you should, in almost all instances put their choice and opinions over those of the back room dealers.
I'm okay with a hybrid approach.

I like having some of the trappings of democratic governance draped over the party. But I am not outraged that experienced elder statesmen of the party are given a big stake in the nomination procedure.

Once upon a time i would have been fully ok with that, as i do think, as you say, those elder party members bring experience to counter the back and forth populist waves.

BUt for me, that time is no more. The backroom elites now, IMO, almost exclusively represent the party donors (elites, corporations, etc) because raising money has so infected the process. And what the elites want is status quo forever.

This is the battle the Dem's will face as the next GE approaches. I think they will get thru the midterms with a win and this question not being the main focus as Trumps economy dominates but if the Dems win big in the MT then the next big battle will be between the establishment Dems and Populist Dems.

I am already seeing a consistent message on MSM media from top pundits asking 'how the Dems will deal with this rising populist movement and how it represents the biggest threat to them winning'.

That is the biggest lie, imo. The reason Trump stole 80% of Bernies populist message from the left is it is CLEAR that message from a true Populist Party could build an absolute dominant coalition (see Hungary throwing out Orban) and the US corporate and Elite class (from both left and right) have been trying to sabotage that since Bernie's run against Hillary.

If the Dems rebranded their movement as 'Populist America' or something like that instead of 'Democratic Socialism', they would, imo draw the biggest part of that Trump coalition (working people) to them.

Which explains why I choose to belong to neither party. :)

I've never entirely bought the story that there was a groundswell for Bernie, and that he should have been the nominee.

Bernie is not even a Democrat. And I do not think a democratic socialist from Vermont who looks like an elderly college professor can win more than 40 percent of the national vote. That's just being realistic.

Trump won because of xenophobia, nationalism, and racism. I don't think he won because he tricked people into thinking that he was a progressive populist.

If I had my way, Joe Biden would have been the nominee in 2016. And he would have easily beaten Trump in my estimation, because the last three election cycles showed me how pervasive sexism is. On merit alone, Nikki Haley, Hillary, and Kamala should have wiped the floor with Trump.

I think that is a vast mistake. My position is not about Bernie specifically and is about Populists in general.

The xenophobic, nationalistic, and racist base has always been for the taking on the right.

What made Trump win was bringing in to that coalition the very base he is now losing. The populists from the working class on the left and right.

Steve Bannon and Bernie have recognized them as the biggest voting block by far, and that is true but no one knew if they could united.

Trump proved they could, albeit by using lies he never planned to deliver on.

Trump would not have won in the past and the next Republican will not win in the future just counting on the racist, xeno vote. That vote will always come to them over Dems. They will need to lie again and pretend they are populists and they will.

Meanwhile the Dem elites and MSM media will pressure dems to stay away from populism, labeling it extreme despite it being the highest polling supported issues in the country, while instead they try to protect the corporate, elite, donor, agenda.
