School shootings have become epidemic in this country. And we must find a way to protect our children without stripping away our freedoms and rights. Just because many here have no need or use for a firearm many of us do as we hunt the way man has always done only with modern weapons not spears. So we need to come to a compromise on guns and public safety. My first question is why were the shooters allowed unescorted entrance into the building? Schools should have locked doors and visitors must ring or phone for entry. The military has done that with restricted areas for decades.

The bill requires teachers who participate in the program to undergo drug testing and psychological evaluation and to complete 144 total hours of training. The training requirements include 80 hours of commission-certified firearms instruction and eight hours of drilling in active shooter of assailant scenarios, among other conditions. The legislation also lays out requirements for schools to annually conduct a school security risk assessment, more reporting of school safety episodes and additional guidelines regarding mental health access in schools, among other provisions.

School boards in Broward, Palm Beach and Orange counties have already expressed opposition to allowing their teachers to be armed. Rep. Mike Gottlieb, a DEMOCRAT, said the legislation is creating a "police state."
