I am glad my parents exposed me to several religious traditions growing up - Orthodox and Protestant Christianity, Buddhism, Sikhism - and I never felt they were torturing me or inflicting child abuse.

My mother was the experimenter.
My father pretty much stuck with the Eastern Orthodox tradition.
While I would not call myself deeply devout, I never felt any association I had with Quakers and Eastern Orthodoxy was child abuse, and I feel like on balance I was enriched by it. But undoubtedly some fundamentalist strains of religion can be repressive. Honestly, the Pentecostals kind of scare me!
Define "unchecked" because AFAIK, there are lots of child abuse laws.
Too bad there aren't more laws against liars, eh? LOL

What I meant by 'unchecked' in that post was: we do nothing and let religion do as it has always done.
Here is the big problem as I see it:
Humans have over populated the Earth, and are in the process of destroying their own habitat.
The solution is that humans need to control their own population growth, cause it to be negative for a while, decide what the optimal level is, try to achieve that.
Everything else is details. Religion being one of the stumbling blocks to achieving the optimal population level.
What I meant by 'unchecked' in that post was: we do nothing and let religion do as it has always done.

Or even the majority of people in the 'advanced' countries.
Every human on Earth could not live like that or we would have destroyed the planet already.
Religion has to either: a) change or b) go away.
If that doesn't happen, humanity is doomed.
The choices are a) Religion changes, b) Religion goes away, or c) The end of humanity.
Personally, I'd like to see humanity endure.
