Reperations~ The other persepective- Rep Jim Clyburn

Hello Jack,

But that doesn't stop some of them from doing it anyway.

Really, the problem is hatred itself.

Hatred makes no sense. Hatred makes no more sense than revenge.

There is nothing good in hatred.

Hatred has no benefit to the hater, nor the hated.

Hatred is indicative of a messed up mind.

Hatred cannot be eliminated with more hatred.

Only love can conquer hatred.

People need to learn how to forgive, even if only in their own minds.

Once people let things go, they can find serenity and happiness.

And that is the secret of life.

The secret of life is enjoying the passage of time.

Hatred is a waste of life.

Every moment spent in hatred is subtracted from the amount of enjoyment possible during a lifetime.

Hatred is thus not logical.

Learn to love, learn to enjoy life.

Hating on others should be seen as a sign that something is wrong in one's own life. Something that needs addressing.

Hatred won't solve itself, but it can be resolved.

LET IT GO. Live a happier life.

Don't worry. Be happy.

Tell that to CFM. Maybe it will help? (probably not though)

You can't sideline a group that has already sidelined itself by the actions of its members.

Pointing that out isn't an attitude but speaking the truth.

Please explain how blacks choosing to produce bastard babies at that rate, committing crimes at such a disproportionate rate, and blaming others for the results of their bad choices is someone sidelining them.

Take a trip through your state , trailers, white trash with confederate flags flying ,

Lot of slaves on the West Coast? How about the Northwest? Any 'Reparations' due the descendants of Union soldiers? How much should Quakers pony up? How about Black slave owners?
I have a problem with 'handing' things to people. Blacks never fought to be 'Free', it was 'handed' to them.
Bill brought up something that Clyburn proposed. Seemed more thought out.

I do not agree with everything TTQ and Taichi say, but they have never given me the impression that they are looking for a pay day or handouts.

I get the impression that many in the black community want our nation and our government to give an explicit acknowledgement and accounting of the toll and continuing outfall of implementing and operating an economy for 400 years that was based on the kidnapping and enslavement of millions of human beings. It was only within our lifetimes that some blacks were allowed to drink from the same water fountains as whites, or to even be out in public around white people without the constant threat of assault, lynching, and abuse hanging over their head.

We are kidding ourselves if we do not believe there is still continuing outfall from four centuries of slavery, or that this nation has fully accounted for its cost to both human beings, to our economy, and to our moral integrity. Institutional racism still exists and creates barriers for people; that is a fact a lot of people will not acknowlege.

I saw a list of "reparations" TTQ put up, and most of them seemed fairly sensible, were largely focused on social and economic justice outcomes, and were well within the scope of what a lot of progressives would advocate for.

This is why I like the approach Rep Clyburn has mentioned.......... You simply take all that out of the equation...........

It aint about fines, money, retribution but rather like a Marshall plan for fellow Americans....

Blacks never fought to be 'Free', it was 'handed' to them.

Many fought for their freedom, many where prevented from doing so on pain of death..

Now listen to this:

As you read this

snip~

By the end of the Civil War, roughly 179,000 black men (10% of the Union Army) served as soldiers in the U.S. Army and another 19,000 served in the Navy. Nearly 40,000 black soldiers died over the course of the war—30,000 of infection or disease. Black soldiers served in artillery and infantry and performed all noncombat support functions that sustain an army, as well. Black carpenters, chaplains, cooks, guards, laborers, nurses, scouts, spies, steamboat pilots, surgeons, and teamsters also contributed to the war cause. There were nearly 80 black commissioned officers. Black women, who could not formally join the Army, nonetheless served as nurses, spies, and scouts, the most famous being Harriet Tubman (photo citation: 200-HN-PIO-1), who scouted for the 2d South Carolina Volunteers.

Americans take Pride in fighting for their Freedom from England.
Blacks don't have that same sense of 'Fighting for their Freedom'.
There wasn't a Black revolt that threw off the chains of Slavery.
Americans 'took' their Freedom from England.
Blacks were 'granted' their Freedom by Whites.

Even now, Whites glorify Matin Luther King (non violent), and diminish the role of revolutionaries like Malcolm X, Black Panthers, that were violent and would 'take' their Rightful Place. I think it is deliberate.

Hello Jack,

Tell that to CFM. Maybe it will help? (probably not though)

It was posted in the chat room which is available to all, and certainly not specifically aimed only at any one person. I expect it to fall on deaf ears, but that is no reason not to say what needed to be said. It is impossible to help somebody work out issues that they don't wish to address themselves, but it never hurts to pop ideas out there just in case somebody who reads it is in the state of mind which allows them to benefit from the message.

Yes. That's true.

Hi Jack,

"Nearly 180,000 free black men and escaped slaves served in the Union Army during the Civil War. "

Did they lead? Was it their idea? I think yopu are missing the point, ... probably deliberatly.

I believe I have already made the point. The following is from the link I just posted. You may have missed this:

As soon as the Civil War began, many free black men in the North wanted to fight for the Union cause. Frederick Douglass, who escaped slavery to become a famous abolitionist leader, stated “We are ready and would go.” But prejudice against black people — both free and slave — was strong and deep in the North as well as the South.

Most white Americans at this time thought of black adults as children, lacking in mental ability and discipline. Slavery had stripped black men of their manhood, so the thinking went, making them dependent and irresponsible. These stereotypes led most whites to assume that a black man could never be trained to fight like a white soldier.

During the early part of the war, President Lincoln opposed accepting blacks into the army. He said that this would push border states like Missouri over to the Confederacy. In effect, both free black men and escaped slaves were banned from the Union Army.

Major General Benjamin Butler commanded the Union forces that had captured and occupied New Orleans in the spring of 1862. The Confederate government of Louisiana had formed a militia consisting of free black men led by their own officers. This all-black militia came to Butler and volunteered to join the Union Army. He transformed the Confederate militia into the First Regiment Native Louisiana Guards led by black captains and lieutenants. He later went on to form two more black regiments, which were commanded by white officers. These became the first, though unofficial, units of black troops in the Union Army."

‘We Are Ready and Would Go’

That is my point.

"The Haitian Revolution was a successful anti-slavery and anti-colonial insurrection by self-liberated slaves against French colonial rule in Saint-Domingue, now the sovereign nation of Haiti. It began on 22 August 1791, and ended in 1804 with the former colony's independence. Wikipedia'

Blacks 'taking' their Freedom. Not White People coming up with the Idea and implementing it.

Your point is not correct Jack... :| That is my point..

You asked why didn't blacks lead... Did you want the ex-slaves to build their own arms plants & then go fight??

Start their own military in the USA back then?? That couldn't happen, & IMHO you should know that..

Those examples about Haiti are just that, the situations & circumstances are not the same..

??Do you think blacks never thought about-desired freedom Jack??

Even to this day.. I believe almost everyone on this board was alive when the last convicted kkk lynching took place in the early 80's..

You can easily run that back to jim crow, & the night riders before that, & then before that.....-->>

And ALL Republicans! I agree with the rest of what you said by the way.

Bill: "Your point is not correct Jack... That is my point."
Jack; I have no problem with being in disagreement.

Bill: "You asked why didn't blacks lead... Did you want the ex-slaves to build their own arms plants & then go fight??"
Jack; Is that what Spartacus did?

"Spartacus was a Thracian gladiator who, along with the Gauls Crixus, Gannicus, Castus, and Oenomaus, was one of the escaped slave leaders in the Third Servile War, a major slave uprising against the Roman Republic. Wikipedia'

Do you know the rebellion was one of many..

Do you recall what happened??? Most meet the same fate-death, torture & Crucifixion..

Is that something you would have preferred here in America??
