German exit polls suggest far-right party has big lead in regional election

BERLIN — Germany's far-right, anti-immigrant Alternative für Deutschland, or Alternative for Germany, (AfD) has won the most votes in the closely watched regional election in the eastern state of Saxony-Anhalt according to exit polls.

Projections show the party is comfortably ahead of Chancellor Friedrich Merz's conservative Christian Democratic Union (CDU), but it remains unclear whether the AfD will win enough seats to secure a majority in the state parliament.

Nazi-Era Language: Individual AfD figures have faced heavy criticism for using terminology or rhetoric echoing the Nazi era. For example, senior politician Björn Höcke criticized Berlin's Holocaust memorial as a "monument of shame," and other members have used banned nationalist slogans or phrases.

Symbolic Timing and Pushback: Critics have pointed out provocative coincidences, such as national party events coinciding with historical anniversaries tied to Hitler's consolidation of power, which the party routinely dismisses as artificial controve.

Domestic intelligence services in Germany monitor parts of the AfD, classifying state chapters or the national party structure with varying degrees of extremist categorization. Investigations have highlighted connections between certain regional candidates and former neo-Nazi networks.
