In the church shooting I am very thankful that there was a responsible, trained person with a handgun.

I guess there are two approaches to problem solving: one in which you feed the poor, get therapy and medicine for the
mentally disabled, employment for the unemployed all using the best science available, and a second where you ignore all that, go to some strange
building where you ask an invisible spirit to solve your problems, eyeball your neighbor's wife, pass a hat around to fund the pastor's boat payments, and encourage everyone
to pack a revolver to shoot whichever hapless deranged lunatic you ignored who happens to shoot first.

there are two appoaches to problem solving, one that focuses on solving the problem by a myriad of approaches, and one that only has the extension of centralized power and reduction of freedom as the solution. by the way, the latter even creates problems where none exist as a pretense to expand authoritarianism.
