I was born in Detroit. When I had to get a birth certificate it was a big deal and cost money. The hospital I was born in closed, then was bought up, merged with others. The Certificate was on paper. It had to be located. I drove several places before it was tracked down.It was costly.

Live in rural areas and a lot can be involved in obtaining old records.Old people or poor people who do not drive are presented with a difficult problem. Voting for 50 years means nothing. We have records that shows that.
The reason they want proof is to make the voting pool smaller. A smaller vote has historically helped the Reds.

There are thousands of similar stories. I lost a lot of documents in a house fire. I had to upgrade my NY driver's license in order to be able to board a plane. A birth certificate was required. I found an online site where I was able to get mine in about 2 weeks and $20. Despite the fact that the hospital I was born in is long gone.

I don't know any state that doesn't require a birth certificate in order to register to vote, or a form of ID that originally required a birth certificate to obtain.
