“United States-Mexico Trade Agreement.”

this thread is an example of TDS run rampant.
You guys will twist and distort and deny...ANYTHING other then to say these negotiations are very likely to succeed.

And now on to the Chinese trade talks! ( difficult as well, but forbearance and determination do pay off)

^Article is 2 days old. the sunset has been settled.
16year term with a review in 6 years, and then it can be extended for another 16 years.
Or it can just go to the 16 years term and be renewed/cancelled.

This is a much better way then what Trump wanted.
His 5 year review was a bad idea -too much uncertainty for business to commit to long term deals when the framework

What was achieved is an understanding on some parts of the negotiations, not an agreement.

This is much like Trump's ground-breaking NK agreement .. that wasn't.

Sure ..

North Korea has increased nuclear production at secret sites, say U.S. officials
"Work is ongoing to deceive us on the number of facilities, the number of weapons, the number of missiles," said one U.S. official.

completely different.
Trump always said "it's up to kim" and indeed it is. "you can lead a dictator to water but you can't make him drink"

This is controlled directly by Lighthizer ( Trump trade rep) independent of a rogue regime..

almost all the points are negotiated in full. i.e. if Canada were to accept it as it,Mexico would sign right away.
It's Yuge. just accept it and move da resistance to another place

The S&P 500 gained 0.8 percent to close at 2,896.74 — a record high — with materials and financials as the best-performing sectors.

Shares of Caterpillar and Boeing rose 2.8 percent and 1.3 percent, respectively. Their stocks are considered trade bellwethers because of their large exposure to overseas markets. Shares of Ford, General Motors and Fiat Chrysler also rose.

The Mexican peso rose 0.7 percent against the dollar.

you should follow before you post. This is a significant rework > i gave a few reasons why.

Further this doesn't depend on the whim of NK. Trump/Lighthizer control their own outcomes

You were also popping the champagne corks before the Singapore summit, so I am afraid I do not consider you a reliable source of information on the alleged success of Trump's efforts in geopolitical negotiations. My judgement on North Korea turned out to be closer to reality than yours.

I have seen reputable journalists say this is not a significant re-working of NAFTA, and pretty much fails on all of Trump's campaign promises.

actually I was the one cautioning against over-reacting to instant success- I frequently mentioned kim may be using a stall - that exact word many times.

However kim is being 'led astray' by Chinese cheating - of course his military is more instituional
and resists as well.the blame falls squarely on China for much

how does this fail? "journalists" are also invested in damning Trump's efforts.

everything I've mentioned in these last few posts look good to me
content/wages/agriculture all look like improvements

digital ( e-books) IP protection , innovation, 0 agri-tariffs.This is a significant improvement over NAFTA in size and scope

Given how quick you were to spike the football in the end zone before the Singapore summit, it strains credulity to even begin to think you have good judgement on Trump's negotiating skills.

When compared to your track record of predictions, I find this analysis to seem more plausible.

"In many respects, Monday’s announcement is like Trump’s summit with North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un. Both came amid much fanfare and bluster — and premature declarations of success."

Canada trade minister cancelled a trip to the EU and is flying in to DC.

I don't think you understand how trade negotiations work. This took over a year to get a bilateral.
They do not want to do it again -it's considered a settled agreement headed toward ratification..

Mexico and the US are committed to this bilateral -it's going to happen, and you can hold me to it.
Canada remains to be seen- but it has to buy in one way or the other

The fact Mexican workers wages went up means that Mexican cheap labor is no longer available.

Wrong. Mexico is getting its wages up to $16/hr, which is where UAW wages start. So they're still cheaper labor than American labor. So what does that accomplish for us? Nothing. Sure, it may raise the wages of a few thousand Mexican auto workers...but those workers will eventually be replaced by robots who you can pay $0/hr and not worry about their working conditions. Raising Mexican wages for auto workers to $16/hr won't bring those jobs back to the US, where UAW workers start at $16/hr and the average is around $23-28/hr.

Is $16/hr > or < $23/hr?

the idea is to rise Mexican wages so that cheap labor doesn't suck out our jobs.
It's also intrinsict good for Mexico, and the better their economy, the less they will illegally "migrate" here
there are many non-UAW autoplants in the US

Higher wages for Mexico is good -do I need to list the reasons why? no more offshoring auto manufacturing jobs to Mexico for cheap labor.

The Mexican wages are still below that of US wages. UAW workers start at $16/hr. The average UAW wage is between $23-$28/hr. So in what world is $16/hr more expensive than $23-$28/hr? Why would jobs that pay $16/hr in Mexico be transferred to the US where the average pay is almost 50% higher? How will that end "offshoring" if the wage in Mexico is still below that of the US?

also there are a lot of US car makers that are not UAW/union

Here's the thing...you're saying these "negotiated terms" will bring jobs back because they raise Mexican wages to $16/hr. BUT $16/hr is where UAW wages start, so even raising Mexican wages to that level still doesn't make US workers more competitive. So why would a company move jobs from Mexico, where they pay $16/hr, to the US where they pay 50% more on average? That makes no sense, and it part of the reason why this thing is so dumb and the people pretending to care about it are dumb. It's just like the stupid tax cut from 35% to 21%. You all said that would bring jobs back, but that's hard to figure since 21% is still higher than most of the nations to where jobs have been outsourced. So you didn't solve for anything; all you did was create more problems like a decline in revenue leading to exploding deficits.

You people don't think anything through. It's all impulsive actions with no thought of the consequences.

But you're raising wages to levels still below American ones.

So all you're doing is increasing the cost of the product to consumers because you increased the cost of labor without getting anything in return.

So if you raise a wage to $16/hr in Mexico, but the average wage is $24/hr in the US, how are you making American labor competitive?

The answer is that you're not. All you're doing is increasing the cost of the product and not bringing any jobs back.

Now, if you raised Mexican wages to $20/hr, then you'd have competitive American labor. But you don't go that high. So instead, you have a half-measure that only ends up costing consumers.

It's also intrinsict good for Mexico, and the better their economy, the less they will illegally "migrate" here

Sure...if there were tens of millions of Mexicans working in the auto sector. But there aren't. There's less than a million. In a county whose population is 128 million, that's not significant enough to change the economy in a meaningful way.

there are many non-UAW autoplants in the US

And their average wages are still higher than $16/hr.
