That is the standard hope of the George Bush-worshipping, Donald Trump-loving rightwinger, isn't it?: that as they get older, voters will change their registration to the Republican party.
That is not the way in works. Labels, and party affiliation on a voter registration form are ephemeral, transient, and meaningless.
What matters is ideology, principles, and social consensus. Not party labels.
Over the broad arc of time, progressivism and liberalism are always making progress...incremental progress.
What was once considered "liberal" or even "radical", will ultimately be considered conventional, even traditional. People who would have been considered liberal in 1955, might look conservative today. It is not that people change as they age....it is that society around them changes, our social norms change, as they get older. It was only about ten years ago that the Republican Party at large and social conservatives were up in arms about gay marriage or legal marijuana.
Barely anyone on here even posts faux outrage about gay marriage or legal marijuana anymore. And yet, old timers on the board can remember when these were key issues for conservatives. Is was only ten or fifteen years ago that Republicans were feverishly working to ban gay marriage at the state level, through ballot proposition.
But, now were are all pretty much "liberal" on these bell weather social issues, eh?
