Wrong. The status is eternal. But the stigma may have stemmed from the fact that unparented children may have in their ignorance turned to underhanded means of survival, including theft.
But since in the third millennium in Western culture that's a virtual non-issue, the stigma that resulted from it has also subsided.

The "Christian Right" (however you want to define them) has narrowed their focus to two things and two things only: abortion and LGBT rights (in particular, same sex marriage). The rest of the bible be damned.
Jesus speaks out against divorce at least four times in the bible but they still support Donald Trump. The bible speaks out against adultery but they still support Donald Trump. It speaks out against lying but they still support Donald Trump. The list goes on.
Do understand a "marriage ban" or a "constitutional amendment" is government action designed to prevent gays from equal protection right?
