Finally some judicial sanity on Civil War memorials.

I recognize the CSA as a valid secessionist movement, which then committed an act of war as a sovereign state. But, it's still fun to call them traitors. I do strongly suspect that George B. McClellan was a traitor, though. Every single thing he did as both a commanding general officer and as a poltical figure served to eggregiously harm America and to benefit the Confederacy.

McClellan just had no guts.Tin soldier

Um, actually, it's because people are successfully lobying their city and county governments to remove these stupid CSA commemorations that these threads have become much more frequent. The letters may not be tersely worded, but, they have proven effective.

What percentage of the total population of these towns and cities is bitching? I'm sure minimal at best.

There was a programme on BBC Radio 4 last night where people were arguing that the current world-wide obsession with statues and such is a replacement for serious politics. I can see the point, but such things do give serious offense to all sorts of people, and are seldom of much aesthetic worth, so I don't see why they should be left blocking up the streets everywhere. They quoted the Nelson Pillar on O'Connell Street that the IRA finally got round to blowing up, giving rise to a popular pop-song. You do learn something from these rows though. I never knew Nelson devoted his growing fame to defending the slave trade and West Indian slavery. Time to see off the London version too, eh? Should enliven next November 5, perhaps!

With us, more practically, the only statue of the period I recall was put up while he was at it to the bloke who came round buying the timber for the ships. Sense is sense!

You are funny. People piss on the memorials and you consider that civil.

reread my post again, this time for comprehension. The word I used was protest. The statue of LEE in NOLA existed is a urine stench cloud which was a health concern.

Are residents of Victoria and Vancouver, BC, still British? I say unless everyone else in the Americas are American, then the Confederates are not. That is a privilege exclusive to citizenship in the greatest part of the Americas. Plus, these were people who hated America. So much so that Lincoln only planned to have 10% of them swear an oath of loyalty in Reconstruction, because, he knew that 50%+1 would be unobtainable for the remainder of the century.
Quite a few still seem to hate the U.S..
