Maine votes out electoral college

Yes, they can, a state can decide what happens with their electoral votes, in the case of Maine, they will go to the popular vote winner.

The Senate voted 19-16 to have Maine join an interstate compact in which participating states agree to award their Electoral College votes to the presidential candidate who receives the most votes nationwide. The vote fell largely along party lines, with all Republicans and two Democrats opposed to it.

Effectively disenfranchising their voters. I thought Dims were against that.

Instituting direct democracy in a country like the United States, just because you lost the election, would be a travesty and would ruin the country. You guys are idiots.

It did not preserve slavery which was a positive, plus, it has worked for the benefit of the U. S.
Slavery was not preserved because the North beat the South. It had nothing to do with the electoral college. I don’t see how it has benefitted us, especially when I see Trump in office.

And of course, it could easily work against them someday. Democrats are really good at passing things that come back and bite them in the ass later.

I have been against it since my first vote, and a lot of the people I voted for President won.

This compact would never survive a constitutional challenge

On what grounds? The Constitution gives the power to states to determine how they will distribute electoral votes. It was never conceived to include popular voting. Electors were supposed to go to their state capitals and deliberate who they thought would make the best president. It was assumed they would vote for somebody from their state which is why electors could not cast both presidential votes for somebody from their state.

Only if states with 270 electoral votes have joined the pact. It is unlikely to ever go into effect since too many states would lose influence.

States should not have influence in elections, We the People should have the influence. One person, one vote. States are represented by their elected representatives.

Right, the electoral college had nothing to do with slavery being preserved or destroyed. You have to look at the much longer history of the U. S. than just Trump.

That is your opinion but it was not the way the Constitution was designed. There is nothing about one person one vote. If my state or congressional district is much larger than yours that gives you more influence than me---how would you change that?

You need to be fighting for amendments. How would you elect the president? What percent of votes would be required for victory?

No, read Madison, there were founders who hoped the electoral college would preserve slavery.

We would elect the president the same way we elect our representatives, one person, one vote, majority rules.

Yes, I know some did. But very few favored direct election of the president even without the slavery issue. The Constitution did not provide for the people to choose the president, senators, or judges. Only House members were elected by the voters.

See, things changed and so should this, the electoral college should be abolished. You know women and blacks vote now, they weren’t allowed to originally.
