My friend was born and raised in East Oakland. I’ve mentioned before when my family moved to Oakland in 1981 it was about 50% black. Today it’s 25%. My friend has posted multiple times on Facebook that black shouldn’t be moving out of Oakland saying it was their cultural hub. (Black) people who had moved out of Oakland responded to him saying why they moved and he was wrong.

So not everyone shares his opinion and is one of multiple reasons why his vision of black separatism isn’t going to happen.

People commenting on his post agreed and said they have been held back by integration. The black experience in America has been a unique one. I don't know that what he wants is possible or how it would play out. But being discussed in a Presidential debate it's clearly a topic on (some at least) people's minds.

That's not a new idea, been around since the BPP, it was one of their proposals, they started breakfast programs, attempted schools, and stressed black entrepreneurship before the violence, and some would say FBI, bought them down.

Difficult, if not impossible, unlike the ethnic groups used as comparisons, black Americans are already assimilated just as third or fourth generation immigrant decedents would be today.

My buddy’s parents were in the BPP and he has written a bunch about how the FBI brought them down. I agree with you that at this point to in essence re-segregate would be almost impossible.

I’m speculating here maybe it’s an empowerment thing to think like this. He ends a lot of posts with All Power To The People. Definitely a Black Panther mindset

I appreciate that you feel the need not to comment on the content of what was posted but to question the intelligence of a black man because he either didn’t spell check his post or wrote with a black dialect.

How does one get into adulthood with “should of went” without knowing the ignorance?

Not criticizing your friend, but if he is now largely middle class successful and is echoing concepts of the 1960's it appears he is romanticizing something he has pulled from that past cause he read about it, or perhaps listened to his parents accounts.

He’s an interesting guy. He started HipHopTV a few years back which he calls CNN for black people. He runs basketball camps in Oakland (for generally lower income kids) where half the time is spent on coding. Part of that is taking kids to Stanford where they take classes and get additional tech exposure. His new big thing is getting black investors into the cannibas business in Oakland.

He’s also created black panther party clothing (guy is very entrepreneurial) which he wears often. So yes I think he definitely romanticizes the past. Based on the responses he got he’s not the only one who does so but like a lot of things in the country, we aren’t going back.
