Nick Sandman getting rich

The mafia still wielded a lot of power for decades. They didn't make as much profit off of alcohol as before, but the damage had been done.

Prohibition didn't accomplish much other than the rise of organized crime, but the repeal of Prohibition had issues of its own. And as Chaz mentions, most of the problems among users of alcohol remained the same. Alcoholism actually went up after the repeal, as did drunk driving.

That being said, I'm not suggesting that we should have kept Prohibition, but legalization of a given substance is always going to have unintended consequences.

That's sensible. But what was the difference BEFORE and AFTER the Prohibition? And why?

Hey! I was wondering where you went. And yes I noticed that some of your posts disappeared.

I was out this evening at my local Buffalo Wild Wings. I was there for probably three hours. I had a tasty dinner, watched some live baseball, and saw an old friend of mine who I hadn't seen in probably a little over a year. We've known each other since 1971. As far as my posts disappearing, yes, DOZENS of them were deleted by your buddy, Phanny Dismal. I hope you've had a nice evening, as well.

Well, to be fair, some of the rise in drunk driving was due to the rise in people driving in general. Shortly before Prohibition, a relatively small portion of the population had cars. After the repeal of Prohibition, cars were a lot more common. During Prohibition, drunk driving fell, but that's probably because the penalties for possession of alcohol were a lot more severe than penalties for drunk driving. It's kind of a weird thought, but in most jurisdictions, drunk driving wasn't considered a serious crime until about the 60s. Penalties really heightened by the 80s.

Here's a good summary of Prohibition's effects: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prohibition_in_the_United_States#Effects_of_prohibition

It won't end it outright. It takes time to adjust. When the drug dealers and gangs disappear, communities take time to recover.

Sort of. Portugal's experience with decriminalization has had mixed results. Overall drug related crime is down, but drug use has not significantly declined for most substances.

The main benefits of decriminalization involve helping people kick addictions (or at least manage them) and reducing violence related to drugs. It doesn't seem to change the percentage of people who use drugs, however.

I think it comes down to root causes. Usually, someone who uses a highly addictive substance is trying to escape the daily grind. There aren't any "casual users" of heroin, for example. A typical heroin user has serious problems that they're trying to deal with in their life.

Obviously, pot is more recreational in orientation, but it has issues of its own. Because pot use has increased in the UK, that's resulted in a decrease in productivity among their population. Pot use in America has risen in some areas where it has been legalized, but we haven't yet seen effects on productivity. If the UK is any indication, we probably will soon though.

In short, decriminalization treats a symptom, but other actions are needed to treat the root causes.

Oh yes I have forgotten about Portugal. It's a great example.

Exactly.

From your link:

So, how do you know he's "getting rich" and "will never have to work again"?

He could have gotten a few thousand dollars and his attorney fees paid.

He could have gotten his attorney fees paid and nothing.

And as far as never having to work again.... I doubt the spoiled little shit-ass has ever worked a day in his young life anyway.

But I will say this... it is no surprise, though I will never understand why, that you right-wing scum-fuckers always celebrate greed and self enrichment at the expense of others.

I suppose it's because you're all greedy scum-fuckers who dream of enriching yourselves at the expense of others yourselves.

I hope Sandman ends up washing dishes at Denny's for a living.

If the kid only scored a few thousand dollars out of those deep pockets he needs to file suit against his lawyers for legal malpractice lol.

At minimum, his college [Marxist indoctrination] should be free. But with any luck at all the kid has a pretty good jump start on life—if he’s smart with his money.

As well it should be. That was bullshit on steroids.

Fox is generally the exception to the rule on bias. Most of the mainstream media leans left, while Fox is the right leaning one (at least when it comes to TV).

For a libertarian, you do seem to lean SJW on social issues. I thought most libertarians hated political correctness.

Left or Right, spin is spin and demonizing is demonizing. The fact you retreated into personal attacks instead of discussing the problem indicates you have reached the limits of your ability to discuss this as an adult.

I do hate political correctness; you're the one who brought it up with your demonization bullshit.

The scary part is the ‘root cause’ could be nothing more than an alcohol induced lapse in judgment for some young people. Get a little too much Tequila on board on a wild night—get mixed up with some wrong people. A hot girl talks a young dude into ‘trying it once’. Etc.

It’s literally a mine field for young people. I see people who were at one time good kids from good families that had their lives destroyed from it. A friend of mine in healthcare lost her life from abusing Fentanyl. She was one of the last people anyone expected to be an opiate junkie. Another one lost her license on account of it. It’s tragic. Legalizing it won’t stop that aspect.

Sane, sober, normal minded people don't support healthcare for illegals or reparations.

I agree about reparations, but I think you're a little off base on health care.

No civilized people would refuse a sick or injured person some basic level of health care. I don't think anyone is suggesting totally free, unlimited hospitalization, non-emergency care or surgery, expensive treatment or physical therapy etc.

But if some illegal has an urgent need for some kind of medical intervention, as a civilized society we're basically honor bound to provide it.

Otherwise, we'd be not much better than North Korea.

Keeping in mind that, contrary to the average conservative's mindset, there are more important things in life than money.

I hope no company wants to touch him with a ten foot pole.

I hope he ends up blacklisted from any decent corporate position or at least from any significant advancement.

Fuck that smirking, spoiled rotten, entitled little bastard.

That may very well happen which means Nikki will have to go into politics or crawl into the sewer pipe and become a lawyer.

I think Nick will be just fine... I did think it to be a shame they were unable to enjoy a field trip to our nation's capital....Now, he can treat the group and go back....
