You're right, all of these non-denominational fundies are/were incredibly stupid and ignorant. Unfortunately, that's who my parents chose to expose me to early on, and part of me thanks them for that, as it backfired, and I am now inoculated against all religious bullshit.
I think you SEVERELY underestimate the # of Christians in the U.S. who subscribe to the fundy set of values, including OT, fire-and-brimstone, hate-filled christianity. Have you ever wondered why it took more than 40 years after Stonewall for gays to have the right to marry? Have you ever wondered why they're STILL not afforded federally-protected rights to be free from jobs/housing discrimination?'
It's because the fundies have a stranglehold on christianity in the U.S. They represent a plurality. Not Catholics, not protestants. Evangelicals.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Evang...Center,mainline Protestants were 14.7 percent.
No, I agree that the fundamentalist rightwing of Protestant Christianity has a large an unwarranted influence in American Christianity, and specifically in the Republican Party.
I have always considered fundamentalist Christians a threat to democracy, to reason, and to mainstream theologically-sound Christianity itself.
