Congratulations to the growing family! Mayor Pete is a political hero of mine, but this personal accomplishment makes me happy for reasons that have nothing to do with politics. To all hopeful adoptive parents of all stripes, never give up! The process is insanely complicated and frustrating, but if you're committed, you'll make it.

Like a butch lesbian? I really can't speak to the homophobic slurs of the 1970s since I was born a decade later and haven't spent a lot of time researching that linguistic history. The point, however, is that colloquial slurs don't often have a lot to do with legal terms that describe contractual relationships between people. Chasten and Pete are both husbands. There is no wife in the marriage.

There totally are. Just last weekend someone called my friend "your hubby" to his girlfriend. They were both offended. Not because they're not married but because they have identities that are not defined by their romantic relationship with each other.

Now, as far as the Buttigieges go, I didn't bring it up. The would be Jack and his thoughtless "bumps". If you cared to be sensitive to their wishes, however, you would understand that they both call themselves the other's "husband" and that you have a human obligation to do the same.
