Speculating and guessing without data isn't unique to science at all. Informed guesswork, hypothesizing, speculating is what every human on the planet does every day.
What sets the scientific method apart is it is testable and repeatable.

I don't know enough about tax policy to have a firm opinion either way. I'd like to evaluate both sides of the argument. Churches use public infrastructure on the one hand. But on the other hand, are they providing charitable services to the community that would otherwise have to be provided by governments?
I certainly don't want anything unconstitutional, like school prayer, or creation science in the public schools.
On the other hand, I'm a little reticent to say religion must stay out of politics. Martin Luther King invoked religious belief in his quest for civil rights. Quite effectively too. Democratic Texas Senatorial candidate James Talarico is openly stating that his religious values and the social gospel help inform his opinions on public policy. I'm okay with that.
