During WW 2, The United Mine Workers and their union leader, John L. Lewis, was considered by a majority of Americans to be traitors and agents of fascism for repeatedly going on strike demanding higher wages during wartime. In the end, FDR seized the mines and put them under martial law with the US Army guarding them. Miners were told to go to work or go to prison.

There were strikes in other industries too. In fact, it is estimated that 36.3 million man-days of labor were lost due to union strikes during the war.

Because they figured out, much like Henry Ford did, that if you pay your employees reasonably, they have no incentive to unionize. The other thing that drives people out of unions is that the union does little or nothing for workers except fight management and demand higher wages.

There is a very weak cause and effect here. Unions did little to create a middle class compared to imposed societal norms. If anything, increasing Socialism and Socialist-like programs by government erode the middle class. This can be seen even more apparently in Europe where unions are far stronger than in the US.

For example, the UAW had a stranglehold on US car manufacturing. When the Japanese (Toyota, Nissan, et al) started building plants in the US they did so in Right to Work states and changed the rules on how unions would operate in their plants were those existed. It gave them a huge advantage while it did nothing to hurt workers who were still getting competitive wages and benefits.

The US manufacturers had to abandon Detroit and Michigan factories and go elsewhere to renegotiate with the UAW--where they stayed in the US--to end the union's often rapacious demands for higher wages that drove overall production and profit down.
