What I have also talked about is how exclusionary zoning works today. We have to understand the past to understand how we got here, but at the same time we're not the same country demographically as we were in 1960.

And a lot of today's exclusionary zoning is done by class (economics). I'm sure you've seen the YIMBY movement in NYC. We have it in SF and its big in other urban areas. That's the fight it's fighting.

I have a whole section of my bookshelf dedicated to the history of zoning and planning etc. so this is right up my alley.

I guess my question is why is this directed at #MAGA types only? Did no Democrats or liberals play any role in setting up zoning across the country?

And even today, you can go to liberal dominated suburbs and find people fighting tooth and nail against zoning changes that would allow even just duplexes or triplexes, as they often want to keep single family only designations (which doesn't discriminate directly by race but certainly can indirectly).

NIMBYism is the ultimate "fvck you, I've got mine," and people in the suburbs (and urban areas) with that attitude are basically reinforcing the exclusionary zoning and planning practices of the past. NIMBYism is certainly bipartisan, but in places like California it's close to a state religion.

I lived in Cotati, CA, possibly the most quant NIMBY hamlet I was proud to be part of. Our fight was keeping out chains, especially big box stores. All business was small and locally owned so money stayed local instead of being funnled to Wall Street.

The exact opposite was true with republican small towns that had a McDonald's and Burger King on a one stop sign Main Street with a Walmart a few blocks away. Almost all the small shops were boarded up or struggling to keep their doors open.
