Describe the difference, and give us some real life examples.
I’m going to say this as plainly as possible so even the liberals (
@QP!) can also understand:
grooming is when adults sexualize children, blur boundaries, or push minors toward sexual behavior or identity politics they are too young to process. A gay character in a cartoon is not that. A character can be gay, bi, or trans and still be presented in a normal, non-sexual way, just like a straight character can exist in a kids’ show without anybody assuming the show is “sexualizing” children. The issue is conduct and content, not mere existence or orientation. Kids should not be groomed in schools, we agree on this. Even the liberals say they do... but we should be careful to focus on where the harm is, in actual grooming, not simple characters in cartoons, for example.
IMHO Americans should be especially careful here, because once government starts deciding which ideas are allowed in art, you don’t get “protect the children,” you get a censorship machine. Florida’s school-book fights show how fast that logic expands: books like
All Boys Aren’t Blue and
The Bluest Eye have been removed or challenged in part over sexual content, while other LGBTQ-themed books have also been targeted by districts but simply do not sexualize the children and should not be targeted. That is a very different thing from a cartoon showing a gay character whose role is simply to exist as part of the story, like Ethan in
Strange World or the same-sex couple in
Lightyear.
The clean line is simple: if a kids’ show includes a gay character with no explicit sexual material, that’s representation, or simply "being". If an adult is introducing sexual material, sexual roleplay, or boundary-crossing behavior to children, that’s grooming. Conflating the two is dishonest, and it hands politicians a blank check to police culture they don’t like. To me, this is far more dangerous than some character on a cartoon being gay. Studds, he was grooming a Congressional Page... that would be a good example of actual grooming. Writing a book that informs kids that families with "two dads" exist, that is just pointing out reality.
The whole point of liberty is that adults can make their own choices, parents can raise their own children, and the state stays out of everyone’s business unless there’s actual harm. A gay cartoon character is not harm. Sexualizing minors is harm.
