I don’t believe the government can break a contract between a student and a private lender. The student can’t break the contract unless the lender agrees.

Some of the “lawyers” on this forum should be able to inform us.

The government can't break the contract but the government can do things that protect those that do.

Look at how long it takes to evict someone that isn't paying their mortgage. The government isn't breaking the contract but rules put in place by the government protect those that did break it by not doing their part.

Those rules already exist in the contract. A contract with the government can be changed by Congress ....SS, Medicare etc.

A private contract is different.

The rules related to things like eviction are put in place by the government. The rules that eviction can occur are part of the contract. The process for how things have to be done are put in place by the government. Do you think the one doing the leasing would go through the steps it takes to go through to evict someone if the laws protecting the tenant weren't in place? That's why I don't have rental property any more. The rules put in place by the State government made it so difficult to deal with those that didn't follow their end of the contract that it wasn't worth it. I sold mine and now buy, flip, and sell.

Yes, we do have a couple of them in the race- Among over a dozen better candidates who are not trying to promise things they cannot deliver.
