Just another school shooting America

Yeah, schools can of course increase security but sadly if someone is really determined it's a difficult scenario to stop. Not fun.
schools may have to build several 'Safe Rooms' strategically located throughout the school. Several singular classrooms where all nearby students can race to that are built in a way that penetration would take 10's of minutes even with proper tools.

We have 7x more school shootings than the next 20 countries combined.......its a fckn joke........dead children are no big deal in America, We even bombs schools in the middle east to prove how testosterone driven we are.........If God is up there he ain't smiling........
it is allowed because the right sees it as a great political tool to divide the electorate and gain voters so they have determined the cost is 'worth it'.

Actually the NRA castrated all the repub congressmen threatening their demise with funding the other candidates that bow to them.......Guns for everyone no matter how many children die.......Murica

There's almost two different discussions that can be had, the first is can you prevent this and the second is how to best minimize the damages. Your idea goes to the second.

I don't own a gun, have no desire to and I've only shot one once in my life. But for the sake of discussion, what would you propose here? What's going to stop, or reduce, school shootings?

This is sad as all get out.

What law or laws does Oregon not have on the books that would have prevented this?
Let's face it, nowhere in America are there proper gun guidelines and laws. Oregon may go left of gun extremism to employ a little common sense, but it's hardly there. I truthfully would argue for needing a license to own and operate larger arms. Treat it like driving a car. It's a right until you massively abuse it and get your license suspended. I'd also place age requirements so these unstable youths aren't given a ticket to play with madness.

I appreciate the response.

I looked up Oregon law and you have to be 18 to buy a gun. So this kid at 16 couldn't legally obtain one (I'll sure we'll find out at some point how he got it).

At 30K feet here's the challenges I see. We have a 2nd amendment so guns aren't going away. For the sake of discussion even if we overturned it and banned guns, there are still millions in the country and retrieving those would be difficult. And like drugs and alcohol, we can make them illegal but people still find a way to get them.

This isn't to say therefore we should throw our hands up and do nothing. But kids who are determined to find something (guns, drugs, alcohol etc.) often can. So we can put more restrictions on legal ownership, but I don't know that it will stop guns from getting in the hands of kids.

That sounds kind of fatalistic I know and I don't mean to be negative. I have a nine year old, I couldn't fathom going through this. But guns have been around a long time and kids didn't shoot up schools previously anywhere near like they do today.

The shooter was a 16-year-old armed with a shotgun who was killed by an armed bystander with a concealed carry permit,

The bystander "definitely prevented more deaths," one source said.

The CCW holder saw the POS enter the school with a gun ran in and shot the POS

Thank God for people who have CCW who was there before police

Totally missing the point, shocker, if the kid, and obviously his dimwit parents, didn’t have access to guns three kids would be alive today

No one needs to ban Guns. The most I'd suggest is putting restrictions in place with a capability limit for what can be manufactured and sold to civilians. In the end, laws won't change things completely; as with everything, there will still be illegal activity. Basing laws on what criminals do is dumb, though. Civilization will always have an underbelly full of lawless activity.

Guess the ONLY solution is to turn schools into reinforced BUNKERS OF EDUCATION. Armed guards at every "entry point", blast doors, reinforced inner doors, no windows.

Or we could always massively restrict guns, but I'm sure the more rational approach is to turn our entire civilization into a massive armed encampment without windows...just gun slits.

We are one fucked up nation.

I know my daughter‘s school restricts access, and I believe many others do as well.

The challenge there is if it’s an existing student barring them having had their access removed, they’re going to be able to get in.

And in this case, I believe the doors were locked and the shooter just shot his way in.
You can police all the doors but a determined shooter is going to find a way in

Three common variables to all mass/school shootings: the shooter, the target, and the gun. No one can predict who the next shooter will be, nor can one foretell all possible targets let alone protect them all, the only controllable variable is the instrument that makes it all possible, the gun.

Until access to guns is seriously regulated these tragedies will never end

We at the very least need to massively restrict them.

But clearly it is special in the USA since we have more guns and more gun crime. No one else on earth struggles with this issue for obvious reasons. We are a land of truly stupid people.

ammosexuals have to have their big boy toys.................FFs are rolling in their graves.........gunfire leading cause of death for kids 1-19.....usa usa usa
We can take out one statistic in that leading cause of death number, and it would be reduced significantly.
Take out two statistics, and it would be a negligible number.

Guns have been around a long time, but never in such numbers, there are more guns out there than people, and access to these guns is easy, you can, by just agreeing to concur to existing laws, obtain a gun via private sale on the above ground Internet

What do you mean by seriously regulated?

Likely true. Sad... but true.

I honestly do not think the rabid right would agree to anything else. They would see the country burn before stopping weapons of war from hitting the streets and ending up in the hands in the mental unstable.

We are one fucked up nation.
Yes, they have a very fucked concept of what the 2nd Amendment means based on what the gun lobby and neocon's have fed them so they can max profits in this area.

What do you mean by seriously regulated?
Regulation with consequences, what we have now is a joke

I’d, if asked, would regulate guns like we do vehicles; permits, tests, repeated registrations, etc., and especially liability insurance
