Theyโ€™ll use radar to track the aircraft altitudes and speeds plus look at weather radar at the time. Theyโ€™ll also go over the maintenance logs. The aircraft looked mostly intact, but as mentioned, but be missing the horizontal stabilizer or elevator which would cause the โ€œlawn dartโ€ effect.

I doubt that it was anything close to intact after slamming into the ground and disintegrating into millions of tiny species of dust.

These are Google Earth screenshots of the exact spot where it made impact....

As you can see by the proximity to residential and commercial buildings, not to mention traffic, there were some EXTREMELY LUCKY people in that area....

All I know is it was a horrific thing to happen. Feel bad for everyone involved. Its even added to my troubles with my wife's fear of flying. She's flown with me on vacations but as she has gotten older she basically refuses to fly anymore. When this crash happened she claims she will never fly again. I believe her too. Looks like Im going to be driving great distances there and back the rest of my life now. Its not that I hate driving that far,....its just that when we can be there in a few hours versus making our trips in two days there and two days back so we can drive one day, get a hotel, than finish the drive the next day that seems like a lot to go thru......:( Oh well,....Buc-ees here I come!

True. Itโ€™s a smoking hole filled with scrap aluminum and human hamburger. I was referencing immediately prior to impact as looking for a cause. It wasnโ€™t lack of fuel or loss of engine power. Diving almost straight into the ground at full speed is a rare instance for a passenger aircraft.

Payne Stewartโ€™s Learjet lost pressurization and everyone was dead while the autopilot flew to the destination then continued until it ran out of fuel. The autopilot kept it mostly under control and it descended in a spiral until impact.

12:57pm
The TULSA 13 lead pilot reports: โ€œWeโ€™ve got two visuals on it. Itโ€™s looking like the cockpit window is iced over and thereโ€™s no displacement in any of the control surfaces as far as the ailerons or trims.โ€

1:10pm
The sound of an engine winding down, followed by sounds similar to a stickshaker and an autopilot disconnect, can be heard on N47BAโ€™s cockpit voice recorder (CVR), which recorded the final 30 minutes of cruise flight. The CVR also captures the continuous activation of the cabin altitude aural warning.

1:11pm
Air traffic control radar reports N47BA beginning a right turn and descent. The NODAK 32 lead pilot reports: โ€œThe target is descending and he is doing multiple aileron rolls. Looks like heโ€™s out of controlโ€ฆin a severe descent, request an emergency descent to follow target.โ€ The Western Air Defence sector reports the Learjet is โ€œspiraling through clouds at 4520N, 09855W.โ€ The TULSA 13 lead pilot reports: โ€œItโ€™s soon to impact the ground. He is in a descending spiral.โ€

1:13pm
Three hours and 54 minutes after takeoff, N47BA crashes on a farm just outside Mina in Edmunds County, South Dakota. It is almost supersonic when it makes impact, leaving a crater 42 feet long, 21 feet wide and eight feet deep. All six occupants of the plane โ€“ four passengers and two crew โ€“ are killed.

From the pictures I've seen, it's a smoking hole alright, but containing nothing whatsoever.

I doubt there was enough of any of them left to see with a magnifying glass.

My โ†’guessโ†...the impact obliterated them into a fine mist and the giant ball of flaming jet fuel incinerated the mist.

There are always pieces even if only the wing and tail tips. If it had a โ€œblack boxโ€ that could have survived even something as cataclysmic as this event.

Nice crater. It looks like a bomb blast.

Ugh, Buc-ees, the Disney of roadside gas stations. I will never set foot in that place again. I thought I was going to be squished by the huge number of very obese people waddling through the place in their pajamas.

I hope they find the black box.

Don't think they'll find anything of anything else big enough to recognize, though.

The people's bodies are atoms blowing in the wind.

IF it has one. :)

Agreed. Itโ€™s all bits and pieces with most of the pointy end vaporized on impact.

Probably true for the pilots and those up front. There may be enough for DNA tests for those sitting toward the back.
