Doesn't matter who runs the economy if the price of oil drops and your economy is reliant on fossil fuel production and revenues.
It's the same thing that happened to Texas just a couple years ago; the price of oil dropped, Texas entered a recession. Unlike Venezuela, though, Texas could go with its hand out to the feds to ask for economic assistance, which is what they did.
Texas is a welfare state because of that.

I lived in New Mexico for 2 yrs and one of my best friends owns a mesican resaurant with his family. We try different ones, but they're all pretty much the same with slight variation.

Venezuela does not work because it is a a petro single good economy. Can you even remember as far back as a 15 years ago when the dictator was paying utility bills for the poor in our country diue to Bush's failed state econ? Oil prices were high so they were flush. Oil prices tank, they are fucked. Norway is socialist also. They don't suffer these wild swings.
