Hiroshima, 6 August 1945

She's a Christian, unlike the assholes who claim to be Christians but never act like one.

She's a deadbeat. Somebody that wants ALL the privileges, but doesn't want to stand up and fight for them. Wants OTHERS to hand her everything. Looking for the Free Ride. (she should self-deport to somewhere, maybe North Korea)

Agreed on the higher standard. FDR dropped it a bit with the internment of Japanese-Americans and some German-Americans.

Nonetheless, if someone brutally breaks into your house and attempt to kill all the occupants and you have the opportunity to blow them away with a 12 gauge shotgun, what would you choose to do? I'd choose self-defense just like FDR and Truman did.

Waging war on Japan and Germany was a justified act of self defense, and the world is better for the defeat of those two militaristic dictatorships.

I do not think I ever implied otherwise.

I think we can legitimately discuss or question certain specific tactical decisions the USA government made concerning the collateral damage inflicted on civilian populations.

We cannot put that evil genie back in the bottle. I am heartened, however, that in the last 76 years humanity has not used that dreadful weapon again.

Yet.

The post WW2 nuclear proliferation agreement was that only five nations would have nuclear weapons. Everyone else would abstain from developing them, on the basis of a promise that the nuclear club nations would make steady progress towards total elimination of their nuclear stockpiles.

As the decades pass, and USA, Russia, China, France continue to maintain their nukes it is probably starting to look to the non-nuclear nations that the nuclear club did not hold up their end of the bargain.

LOL! You won't defend yourself against me. You said you'd run to the cops. Fucking degenerate coward.

A certain amount of civilians are going to be killed in any war.

The Nazis were totally indiscriminate and ruthless about it.

Which in the long run undermined their cause and contributed to their defeat.

Our obligation as a liberal western democracy is to really consider how much damage to civilian populations is acceptable in the context of our strategic goals, and how much should either be avoided or mitigated to the extent possible.

Those are the questions people ask about the fire bombings of Dresden and Tokyo, and the nuclear strikes.

Our ONLY obligation ... is Winning.
If we DON'T win, there will be no 'liberal western democracy'.

The Nazis and Japanese learned the hard way that ruthless and indiscriminate killing of civilian populations undermines your war effort in the long run by turning world opinion against you, creating ten new enemies for every civilian you kill, and wasting valuable military resources on a campaign of retribution which really serves no effective strategic military purpose.

Look at Libya giving up their nuke program.

What did it get them? targeted regime change and a brutal decade long civil war

Interesting comment. In all the years it's been my displeasure to share forums with you, I have never once seen you claim that you served in our military. Doesn't that make YOU a "deadbeat" as well? Or do you consider yourself a patriot because you're okay with sending other ppl to die for your freedom to act like an ass?

It's pretty hard to tell others "No, you can't have that" while having that yourself. There are now nine nations with nukes.

all liberals are cowards and draft dodgers

People toss that saving a million lives around like it is established fact.

We do not actually know what would have happened.

I think there is a lot of evidence the Japanese were prepared to fight on. But we will never truly know.

What I recall reading is that the Japanese were on the verge of surrender, and all that was left was to work out the terms without completely humiliating the emperor.

Ummmmm...it takes two to make peace and only one to make war.

What was FDR supposed to do after Pearl Harbor, in your opinion?

Russia had entered the war. The Japanese feared the Russians. There were already ongoing talks for surrender. The matter of the Emperor was the only thing left to negotiate. We were already bombing the crap out of Japanese cities. There was no need to use a nuclear weapon on the two cities. It was just a needless show of power.

Nuking Moscow would have forever repudiated the idea that America stood for justice and righteousness and that we could be trusted.

By doing so we would have turned on an ally which had already lost 24,000,000 dead in WWII vs our loss of 600,000 lives in the war.

And this is the position the Leftists in America are now in.

They have chosen to turn on the Right and make us their enemy and they can't turn back and now they HAVE to defeat us or eliminate us.

And they will always be known as traitors and sneaky, deceitful, untrustworthy bastards.

The idea of nuking Moscow is a short sighted, sophomoric move that, once done, quickly becomes apparent was the worst thing we could have done.

^ And you guys like to say that the left always operates on emotion. Your post proves that's a lie.
