Why the Republicans' newest fight with Big Bird matters
A quarter of a century after Newt Gingrich went after funds for public broadcasting, some Republicans are apparently ready for Round Two against Big Bird.

Shortly after Republicans made dramatic gains in the 1994 midterm elections, then-House Speaker Newt Gingrich was eager to get to work on his plans to balance the budget. High on the Republican's list was eliminating federal funds for public broadcasting.

The move was not well received. In fact, it led to headlines such as, "Are Newt and His Cronies Afraid of Big Bird?" When the Clinton White House prevailed in budget talks, and support for public broadcasting survived, there were related headlines such as, "Big Bird Taken Off Death Row."

In other words, Republicans picked a fight with the Corporation for Public Broadcasting — and Big Bird won.

A quarter of a century later, it appears the GOP is taking aim at the 8-foot, 2-inch Muppet again. NBC News reported yesterday:

Big Bird's seemingly innocuous — and obviously fictional — announcement Saturday that he has been vaccinated against Covid-19 caused a stir online, as Republicans like Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas accused the yellow anthropomorphic bird of tweeting "government propaganda."

This is brought to you by the letter F as in fuck idiots

Ahhh! It's a Grudge Match between Big Bird and the Republicans.

Lemme see. First it was Dr. Seuss, then Mr. PotatoHead, then red meat, then the caravan, then the vaccine.

So now it's Big Bird?

The RepubliQans have lost their fucking minds. I don't know if I can ever vote Republican again with all the fucking RepubliQan morons in Congress.

Trump-mocks-disabilityx.gif

you've never voted republican. you're a fake and a fraud.

Agreed. The GOP died in 2016 and there were very few Republicans left after 2018.

After 38 years of voting Republican, I started voting for Libertarian Presidents in 2016 and 2020. I expect to do the same in 2024.

yes libertarians have become globalist fascist douches.

Yes, I believe that some of the top leaders of this nation, if they believed it would give them more power (especially any unlimited emergency power that ignores constitutional restrictions), would most definitely lie about a vaccine.

Do I think they are at this time? No. Do I think we should be careful to make sure they don't? Yes.

Again, for the folks with memory holes like Biden... I believe in vaccines, I was part of the test groups and got mine long ago before it was a political tool and I recommend folks get a vaccination themselves. I do not, however, believe that we should force folks to get a vaccine. Whether it be for flu or for this disease, folks need to make their own healthcare choices.

So you lack the fortitude and honesty to tell the people who decide to be unvaccinated that they are stupid. And you ignore the aspect that not doing so injures everyone else
by propagating a virus that could be arrested more easily, causing preventable deaths of others. Your position is one part hypocrisy, one part coddling morons, one part fence straddling and
one part indifference to the wellbeing of others.

There is no intelligent or virtuous choice to be unvaccinated against covid 19. There is only a stupid and selfish choice to do that.

Does your freedom loving extend to drunk driving, corporal punishment, kids smoking, drug abuse, jaywalking on busy highways, and unsafe sex in prison?

What other vice and death will you worship at the alter of freedumb?

You're wrong on the science. The vaccine doesn't prevent transmission.

Non sequitur, Fredo. Vaccinations reduce susceptibility to disease and the transmission of disease.

See if you can find a sane High School student to read and explain this too you:
https://publichealth.jhu.edu/2021/new-data-on-covid-19-transmission-by-vaccinated-individuals
  1. Vaccines remain highly effective at preventing severe disease.
  2. Breakthrough infections among vaccinated individuals remain uncommon.
  3. The majority of new COVID-19 infections in the US are among unvaccinated people.

I haven't seen this retarded kind of thing since the 70s when old school liberals would cry that repubs gated bib bird. Never did I think suck stupidity could be repeated but here we are. You stupid cunt

A person can't both be a Buddhist and a liar.

The Reichwing has been whining about Sesame Street for literally years. Remember when they introduced gay characters? Hispanic and other non-white characters? Characters with disabilities?

Apparently they want their kids to live in a white bread world where everyone is as homogenized as the milk they drink.

Yes, and they have an infected nerve attached to their preachy bone. If anything touches it it sends them into a frenzy of rage.
But if they get the same messages in their churches in the form of inscrutable allegory or Latin, that's just preachy keen.

The vaccine doesn't stop transmission. Nobody disputes this.

You're very ignorant.

They actually do harm to other people.

The Trumps and people like him? No shit, Fredo. Lots of harm. Consider how lying about the pandemic has set back our nation?

Sure, the nation was going to take a hit, but why make it worse than it had to be?

Hello Dutch Uncle,

Senator Ted Cruz, in a continuing bid to display his leadership qualities as President 2024, attacks Sesame Street government puppets.

Not really a big surprise that Cruz hates Big Bird, but interesting since Ted is fully vaccinated of his own free will. Any doubts he wants his family vaccinated too?

The tweet from Big Bird announcing his vaccination sparked outrage from individuals on the political right, with Cruz condemning the message.

<Cruz tweet> "Government propaganda…for your 5 year old!"

Walter Shaub, the former director of the U.S. Office of Government Ethics, responded to Cruz’s tweet, writing, “You are vaccinated.”

Hey. Cruz ought to know about using propaganda.

He is an expert at it.

Agreed. He's making waves to attract attention.

Ted Cruz gave up last year on actually doing the job for which he was elected. Now he's just in it for all the cream he can skim for himself before bailing out with his Congressional parachute.

I approve of using Big Bird to send the message that getting vaccinated is a good idea.

But I don't see how it is 'government propaganda.'

I don't believe 'the government' controls what PBS broadcasts.

I do think the government should buy up a lot of PR to get the message out that everyone needs to get vaccinated.

I would like to see pro-vaccine public information messages run alongside commercials in NFL football games.

I'll have to wear that badge. Sesame Stree wasn't allowed in my parent's house when I was growing up. I was born in '66 and it started in '69 I believe. I didn't turn it on for my kid or encourage him to watch it when he was growing up either. I didn't forbid it, but I didn't encourage it either. And just like explaining the anti-hunting theme of Bambi, if we watched something like that I wanted him to be old enough to understand some of the obvious political messages that can only be called indoctrination. If anyone is going to indoctrinate my kid it needs to be me.

The caution about the show does not stem from "Hispanic or non-white characters" or "Characters with disabilities" but to say there is no [leftist] political agenda on that show is to be disingenuous.

The Big Bird thing is definitely using a government funded child's character to promote one point of view to children. While it is a point of view that I agree with, government has no business doing this, IMO. So I reiterate, Ted isn't wrong. My vote is still "other."
