Venezuela's government was a Capitalist Kleptocracy (much like the ones that abound in Africa) where the political class was stealing the vast majority of the revenue generated from the Petroleum industry and investing abroad in Swiss Bank Accounts and not in public institutions, infrastructure, education, government services or any sort of economic development. They just stole the wealth of the nation and left their citizens to starve when the economy collapsed when oil prices dropped.
What happened in Venezuela was that a Capitalist Kleptocracy was replaced with a Socialist Kleptocracy. Is anyone really suprized that both failed?

The Spanish Conquest did produce a large Mestizo class in central Mexico (i.e. Tenochtitlan...aka Mexico City). However the general population of Southern Mexico remained predominantly Mayan and Northern Mexico remained predominantly Mexica. Shoot in many parts of Central Mexico Nauhatl is still spoken commonly. Same in the old Mayan regions. Mayan is still spoken.
